They were native to\u00a0O\u2018ahu and disappeared around 1837.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty percent of all known recently extinct birds in the world were originally from Hawaii.\u00a070 percent of all native bird species in the state are extinct. The primary threats to Hawaiian birds are exotic species: predators such as feral cats and rats; herbivores such as goats and pigs that degrade native habitat; diseases such as avian malaria and pox transmitted by non-native mosquitoes; and plants that displace native species and reduce habitat quality for native birds.\u00a0Climate change may further reduce or even eliminate mosquito-free \u2013 and therefore disease-free \u2013 upland habitat as temperatures rise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">John Zorn named an album after this guy.
