Levaillant&#8217;s <em>Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets.<\/em> Vol 2, Paris, 1801-5.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mascarene_Islands\">Wikipedia <\/a>says: <em>The <b>Mascarene Islands<\/b> (or <b>Mascarenhas Archipelago<\/b>) is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar comprising Mauritius, R\u00e9union, Rodrigues, Agal\u00e9ga, Cargados Carajos shoals, plus the former islands of the Saya de Malha, Nazareth and Soudan banks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Errol_Fuller\">Errol Fuller<\/a> says: <em>&#8220;In all probability, the very last living Mascarene Parrot was kept, far from its natural home, in the Zoological Gardens of the King of Bavaria in Munich.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fieldguidetoextinctbirds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/parrot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2675\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fieldguidetoextinctbirds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/parrot-735x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Mascarene Parrot\" width=\"714\" height=\"994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fieldguidetoextinctbirds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/parrot-735x1024.jpg 735w, https:\/\/www.fieldguidetoextinctbirds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/parrot-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Mascarene Parrot had a large red bill\u00a0and long, rounded tail feathers. Its legs were red, and it had naked red skin around the eyes and nostrils. It was native to the Mascarene Island of <a title=\"R\u00e9union\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R%C3%A9union\">R\u00e9union<\/a>\u00a0in the western\u00a0<a title=\"Indian Ocean\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Ocean\">Indian Ocean<\/a>.\u00a0Only two stuffed specimens exist today, in Paris\u00a0and Vienna. The date and cause of extinction for the Mascarene Parrot is unclear, but it is probable that the species became extinct prior to 1800, and may have become extinct in the wild\u00a0even earlier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">Based on a colored engraving by Jacques Barraband from F.
